Who is she?
There have been a number of variations of the character Captain Marvel which has appeared over the years. The more modern version of the character Carol Susan Jane Danvers is getting her own movie in March 2019.
Carol Danvers version of Captain Marvel first appeared in 1968 Marvel Super Heroes #13. She was an extremely talented fighter pilot, a former officer in the US air force and a former CIA agent when she was hired as head of security at NASA headquarters.
While working at NASA she became close to a man by the name of Dr. Phillip Lawson who in fact was a member of an alien race known as the Kree who was also known as Mar-Vell. A romance ensued between the pair which would eventually place her in danger when a villainous Skrull named Yon-Rogg who was an enemy of Mar-Vell kidnapped Carol Danvers in order to use her as bait to capture Mar-Vell. When Mar-Vell showed up Yon-Rogg used a weapon called the Psyche-Magnetron.
During the ensuing fight, the Psyche-Magnitron was damaged and exploded forcing Mar-Vell to shield Carol with his body from the explosion. This caused Carol’s DNA to merge with Mar-Vell Kree DNA creating the perfect blend of human and Kree genes. Later Carol would discover she had gained superpowers from this event.
Captain Marvel possesses superhuman strength and durability, can fly at roughly six times the speed of sound and can discharge explosive blasts of radiant energy, which she fires from her fingertips. She also demonstrates the ability to absorb other forms of energy, such as electricity, to further magnify her strength and energy projection, up to the force of an exploding nuclear weapon. When sufficiently augmented, she can withstand the pressure from a ninety-two-ton weight, and strike with a similar level of force, although Hank Pym theorized that this likely was not her limit. Danvers cannot absorb magical energy without consequence.
Over the years Carol Danvers was also known as Ms. Marvel, Warbird and Binary. It wasn’t until 2012 Avenging Spider-Man #9 after Mar-Vell had died that Carol took on the name Captain Marvel in the comics however in the upcoming movie she will be known only as Captain Marvel right from the get-go.
Throughout her career as a superhero Captain Marvel has worked with many different teams such as the Avengers, A-Force, Guardians of the Galaxy, S.H.I.E.L.D, The Fantastic Four, Star Jammers and the X-Men.
We know Captain Marvel will be joining the Avengers in Disney’s upcoming Avenger’s End Game movie out later this year however in the meantime you can catch her in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie out March 8th, 2019.
